Natural ingredients that are used as acne-fighting medication include:

  • Tea Tree Oil
  • Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch hazel)
  • Green Tea Extracts
  • Chamomile
  • Lemongrass
  • Aloe Vera
  • Echinacea Extract

Natural acne medications are preferred by many people and can be very effective on mild to moderate acne. Many drugstores now carry a range of natural acne products as well as other acne medicine.

Common Over-the-Counter Medicines For Acne

The most common over-the-counter choices for acne medicine are benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. Sulfur and resorcinol are other active ingredients often used in conjunction in acne medications. Medicines containing these ingredients are available in a variety of forms and varying strengths. Salicylic acid is usually found in a gel or serum, while benzoyl peroxide is typically found as a cream.

Although many acne medications may contain similar active ingredients, the composition and strengths of the treatments vary as they are designed for treating different things. Prevention treatments are applied to keep outbreaks from occurring, while others are designed to treat and heal the active blemishes. Spot treatments are designed for use on a small area or on individual blemishes.

Be cautious in using topical medications, as the skin can easily become dried out from the active acne-fighting ingredients in many over-the-counter treatments.

Prescription Medications

If over-the-counter treatments don't work for you, your dermatologist or doctor can prescribe an acne medicine. Prescriptions for acne may include the following.

Choosing Acne Medicine

Choosing the right acne medicine can be difficult. If you have occasional blemishes, spot treatments, a mild natural product, or a simple home remedy may be all you need.

For those with moderate to more severe acne, a combination of acne products may be needed to help you achieve clear skin. For very severe, stubborn, or cystic acne, a dermatologist may need to prescribe the appropriate medication and possibly use other techniques, such as laser treatments or microdermabrasion to treat the acne.
