Types of Acne Skin Care Products
If you step inside any drugstore, you’ll find a plethora of acne skin care products. These cleansers, toners, moisturizers, creams, gels, and cosmetics are designed to fight mild to moderate acne. You can either mix-and-match products from a variety of different manufacturers or purchase a complete skin care system from one company.
Cleansers
Cleansers are by far the most popular acne skin care products. They are used to remove sweat, oil, dirt, and makeup from the surface of your skin. This makes it easier for other acne treatments to be absorbed. Try St. Ives Medicated Apricot Scrub for Oily or Acne Prone Skin or Clean & Clear Foaming Facial Cleanser for Sensitive Skin.
Toners
Toners or astringents formulated for acne-prone skin remove the excess surface oil that can cause breakouts. They can be used one to three times per day, although frequent use may cause redness or irritation in people with extremely sensitive skin. Try Clearasil Ultra Acne Eliminating Astringent or Neutrogena Clear Pore Oil-Controlling Astringent.
Moisturizers
Many people with acne-prone skin are hesitant to use a facial moisturizer. However, using a light, non-greasy moisturizer formulated for your skin type will keep your skin hydrated while preventing future breakouts. Try Neutrogena Rapid Clear Acne Defense Lotion or philosophy’s hope in a bottle oil-free moisturizer.
Creams and Gels
Acne fighting creams or gels typically contain a more concentrated version of the ingredients found in other acne skin care products. Clearasil Maximum Strength Acne Treatment Cream is a popular benzyl peroxide acne medication frequently used by young acne sufferers. Adults with sensitive skin often prefer organic products such as Burt's Bees Doctor Burt's Herbal Blemish Stick with Tea Tree Oil.
Cosmetics
Women who are troubled by blemishes often choose to purchase makeup for acne prone skin. Neutrogena Skin Clearing Oil Free Makeup is a great foundation to even out your skin tone, while Almay Clear Complexion Concealer offers additional coverage for women with breakout-prone skin.
Active Ingredients
Although there are many different types of acne skin care products, most use the same active ingredients. Therefore, it’s important to read labels carefully. Using several different products with the same active ingredients will increase the risk of irritation, possibly leading to additional skin problems.
Benzyl Peroxide
Benzyol Peroxide helps provide a clearer complexion by destroying acne-causing bacteria. It is an antiseptic and oxidizing agent that can be found in a variety of concentrations. Side effects include dryness, itching, and mild skin irritation.
Generally, acne skin care products with benzyl peroxide must be used for several weeks before you begin to see results.
Salicylic Acid
If you have mild acne, acne skin care products containing salicylic acid can unclog pores to treat current pimples and prevent future breakouts. However, products with salicylic acid do not have any effect on sebum production or acne-causing bacteria.
For maximum effectiveness, products with salicylic acid must be used on a regular basis. Unfortunately, some acne sufferers experience skin irritation with frequent use of these products.
Herbal Ingredients
If you’re interested in natural skin care products, you’ll be pleased to learn there are many acne treatments that use herbal ingredients to promote a clearer complexion. For example, Kiss My Face Organics Break Out Botanical Acne Gel contains ingredients such as tea tree oil, lavender, sage, rosemary, and witch hazel.
Acne treatments that use herbal ingredients are often less likely to cause allergic reactions or irate sensitive skin. To learn more about this method of acne treatment, please see the LoveToKnow article on Natural Skin Care Products.

Comments
Muna, acne can be a tricky problem to tackle, especially if it keeps coming back this way. You might benefit from a prescription medication if it repeatedly comes back despite your best efforts to keep it at bay. Drink plenty of water, eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables and adopt a skincare regimen that's not too complex. Keep it simple, yet targeted toward your skin type (if you are oily, use cooling, oil-free items, if sensitive, use products formulated for that type of skin, etc.) and report back. Good luck!!
