Dove Skin Care

From LoveToKnow Skincare

Dove skin care has launched a highly successful advertising, marketing, and wellness campaign aimed at real women and their concept of beauty. The “Campaign for Real Beauty” features "regular" women, not models, in unretouched photos. Knowing about the products behind the campaign can help you decide if they are right for you.

Dove Skin Care

Dove Skin Care for the Face

Dove features a full line of facial products. Cleansers, moisturizers, cloths, and pillows are available in a variety of formulas and lines based on specific skin care needs. Some formulas available in the cleansing line include:

Daily hydrating cleansing cloths, cool moisture cloths, and gentle exfoliating pillows are can also be found at a nearby store. The moisturizing line also features a formula for deep moisture and sensitive skin.

A new Dove skin care line with products available in each area has recently been developed. Called the Energy Glow line, it works to brighten and enhance natural skin color. It works to smooth skin and even tone. This line is available in many body care formulas, too.

Dove for the Body

Body products in the Dove skin care line include anti-perspirants/deodorants, beauty bars, body washes, lotions, and creams. Many products featured have supplemental products across different categories that work together for a more complete skin care regimen. Examples of this include:

The Calming Night line is made to be used at night to relax senses and renew skin while you sleep. The bar and body wash have honey and vitamin A, the hand cream has advanced moisturizers to nourish hands and cuticles, and the lotions contain shea butter and honey. All of those ingredients work in unison to create a rejuvenated skin tone. A calming scent has been added to the products to aid in sleep.

Additionally, the body lotions and creams feature a 24-hour “Nutri-Serum” that works around the clock to provide the following essential nutrients:

  • Glycerin—holds water in skin
  • Lipids—help maintain skin’s moisture barrier
  • Grapeseed and green tea extract—free-radical fighting antioxidants
  • Vitamins A, E, B5—helps with skin barrier lipid metabolism.

Company Information

Dove is owned by a multi-national corporation, Unilever. The Dove line began during World War II, when the first bar was developed as a pre-treatment for burns and wounds. After the first formula was further developed, the Original Bar was made available for purchase in the 1960s.

The Dove website contains helpful product information. Personalized recommendations can be obtained, and free samples are offered for many of their products. Additionally, skin care and facial care articles written by experts are available online. The articles address things like skin care dilemmas, sensitive skin, and ageless beauty.

The company is dedicated to enhancing the self-esteem of young girls everywhere. Dove supports several female empowerment programs through the Dove Self-Esteem Fund:

  • In the United States, a program in partnership with the Girl Scouts called “uniquely ME!” discusses peer pressure, values, eating disorders, and other issues with 8-14 year old girls through activity books and exercises.
  • “BodyTalk,” a UK program created by the Eating Disorders Association, is aimed at 13-14 year old girls to help them deal with feelings about body and appearance.
  • In both Canada and the Netherlands, Dove helped support “Beyond Compare,” a photography exhibit questioning female beauty standards. Proceeds benefit charities working against eating disorders.

Comments

SJ, that is very true. I personally don't consider Dove's advertisements to be exploitative in the least, but I can understand some people are simply more sensitive to certain concepts.

Natalia, do you also not allow your children to go to the beach where they might see women wearing less clothes then on the Dove ad? Almost every magazine has a cover with pictures of stick thin celebrities wearing less then these women are.

Natalia, you make some interesting points. I'd recommend you direct them directly to Dove (we only write the articles, but we definitely appreciate your point of view). Visit Dove.com for details.
