Understanding the Basics of Men’s Skin Care
Every guy needs to understand the basics of men’s skin care! It takes more than shaving cream and an aftershave solution to keep your skin healthy. Men need good products--shaving creams/gels, cleansers, toners, and moisturizers that will protect their skin.
Shaving
Shaving is where most guys usually start and often end their men’s skin care. Most men use a shaving cream/gel or a pre-shaving cream. It is important to choose a shaving cream/gel without alcohol, menthol, mint, camphor, or high levels of potassium or sodium hydroxide. These products claim to allow a closer shave, but what they actually do is irritate the skin and hair follicles. This increases the risk of ingrown hairs. Some experts also feel that men should use a shaving gel over a shaving cream because shaving cream can create air pockets leading to nicks and cuts.
Many men shave with razors. However, this can increase skin irritation and cause nicks or cuts. An electric razor is generally recommended if you have sensitive skin.
Before shaving, men should steam their face to open pores and hair follicles. Steaming the face should help prevent razor burn and cuts.
The key to men’s skin care while shaving is to use natural, healthy ingredients. If your skin looks damaged, stings, burns, or tingles after placing a product on it, stop using it. If possible, try not to shave every day. Give your skin a chance to heal.
Cleansing the Skin
A man’s skin is thicker, oilier, has larger pores, and is more inclined to sweat than a woman’s skin. Face washing keeps pores unclogged. Clogged pores can lead to acne and ingrown hairs.
Men should try to find a gentle, water-based product for cleansing. Ideally, this product would be suited to your skin type. If you’re not sure of your skin type, the following tips will help:
- Dry skin is tight feeling and may lack elasticity. It also may look flakey or peel.
- Sensitive skin turns red easily and is more prone to razor burn.
- Oily skin is greasy to touch and may leave a residue on your clothing or fingers.
- Combination skin is oily in places and dry in others.
When it comes to face washing, the best products are designed for men. You don’t want to use your wife or girlfriend’s cleanser. Stop by the drugstore and pick up your own products.
Toning the Skin
Most after shaves are actually toners. Toners are important because they help remove any residue left on your skin after cleansing. Toners can help dry up excess oil on oily skin or provide hydration for dry skin. Men should use non-alcohol aftershaves or toners to avoid damaging or drying their skin.
Protecting the Skin
Moisturizer is an important part of men’s skin care. If you have oily skin, you should still use a moisturizer designed for your skin type.
Ideally, a men’s skin care moisturizer would have sun block of SPF 15 or higher to prevent wrinkles and the signs of premature aging. It can also help prevent skin cancer. Men may consider applying a retinoid skin treater that can help with sun damage, wrinkles, and acne.
For treating wrinkles and acne, the treatment for men and women is the same. If it works, don’t be afraid to use a woman’s skin care product for these skin conditions.
