Mosquito Bite Reactions
From LoveToKnow Skincare
Mosquito bite reactions can be minor or severe depending on whether the person is allergic to mosquito bites.
Common Reactions
The most obvious reactions to a mosquito bite include the following:
- Swelling
- Itching
- Redness in the affected area
Bumps from mosquito bites are usually soft and may appear soon after the bite. Sometimes the bump may not appear until a day or two after the bite. The bump can last up to 10 days. People who are sensitive to mosquito bites may have larger sized, swollen areas that itch. The swelling extends beyond the actual bite or itch in that case.
Severe Mosquito Bite Reactions
Mosquito bite reactions that are severe can include trouble breathing or swallowing, or the person can go into shock. That reaction is similar to an allergic reaction from a bee sting. If someone has trouble breathing or has any of the above reactions after a mosquito bite, call 911 immediately.
Treating Mosquito Bites
For minor symptoms, wash the area with soap and water. Next, apply an anti-itch cream or lotion. Calamine lotion is recommended for itchy skin. Applying cold compresses onto the area may make it more comfortable, as well. Avoid scratching the bites because the area could get infected. Young children may need to have gloves placed on their hands to keep from itching.
Avoiding Mosquito Bites
Prevent mosquito bites by staying inside during the peak hours, from sunset to sunrise, when mosquitoes are likely to be out. Window screens can keep mosquitoes out of the home, and in some societies where window screens are not the norm, people are advised to sleep with mosquito netting, because some diseases, like Malaria, are transmitted by mosquito bites.
You can also avoid the bites by using mosquito repellent. Use a repellent that lasts all day, as long as you are outside, or reapply the repellent per the directions on the product. The best way to prevent reactions from mosquito bites is to avoid getting bitten.
