Removing Age Spots

From LoveToKnow Skincare

If you're familiar with the appearance of those brownish patches that suddenly appear – or perhaps have been around for quite a while – then you probably have wondered at least once or twice how you can go about removing age spots. The good news is that it's entirely possible, and there are several ways to go about it!

Sun spots can be removed via numerous methods.

About Age Spots

Age spots are also known as liver spots. They manifest themselves as some variation of brown – some spots are very faint and barely light brown, while others are much darker and noticeable. They tend to appear on the face, feet, hands and legs over time (hence the "age" factor). Causes can vary, and are often attributed to genetics or sun damage. Sun spots are more prevalent among individuals who burn easily and who have freckles.

It's important to note that age spots are not harmful and aren't suggestive of a disease or skin disorder. On the contrary, they're quite normal and most people will develop at least one in their lifetimes. However, if sun damage is to blame for the development of an individual's age spots, it may be cause for concern. Watch the spots for changes, such asymmetry and discoloration.

Despite being common, there's no denying that age spots may be rather unsightly at times, too. Of course, their location and color makes a big difference. A small, light brown colored spot on the lower jaw is not likely to be very noticeable, while a dark brown spot directly on the cheek will be much more obvious. Since this can detract from the overall appearance, many people choose to seek treatment for their age spots.

Methods of Removing Age Spots

Removing age spots can be accomplished through a number of methods, including the following:

  • Chemical peels dissolves age spots and other damaged surface tissue through the use of a specialized solution. There are various types of peels, and the intensity of the treatment depends on the skin type, degree of damage and application method. Generally, patients may experience a stinging or itching sensation during chemical peel treatments, with some irritation or redness during the healing period.
  • Cryosurgery is often used to eradicate cancerous skin cells, but it can also be used to remove age spots. The technique involves freezing abnormal cells, and is typically quite quick. Side effects include the formation of blisters, scarring and bleeding.
  • Intense Pulsed Light Therapy, also known as IPL, is a more recent player in the world of age spot removal. It involves a stream of intense broadband light that burns age spots quickly and efficiently. Generally, the treatment is free of side effects and does not require a long recovery period.
  • Laser resurfacing is considered the gold standard when it comes to age spot removal methods. The treatment involves burning the spots off with a laser. Pain levels are usually minimal, and the treatments are generally short, too. Note that some individuals may need to undergo a series of treatments if their age spots are very dark or unresponsive to single treatments, and that proper sun protection is absolutely essential in order to see continued results over time.
  • Microdermabrasion is a procedure that essentially exfoliates the skin deeply, resulting in fresher, healthier and smoother skin. In addition to improving the skin's texture, microdermabrasion also serves to diminish the appearance of pigmentation, such as age and sun spots. Side effects are typically minimal, though this does depend on the individual's general sensitivity.

Protect Yourself

Since sun damage is such a major factor in the development of age spots, it should come as no surprise that preventing their formation starts with sun protection. Proper sun protection is essential for everyone who spends time outdoors, no matter what time of year it is. Wear sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15, and be sure to apply it at least 15 minutes prior to stepping outdoors.
