Skincare Products for Babies
From LoveToKnow Skincare
Skincare products for babies are available to help preserve and pamper the newest (and most sensitive!) of skin.
Your Baby’s Skin
It is practically inevitable that the newest member of your family may experience mild rashes, skin irritations, and other unconcerning complications as the baby adapts to its environment and various skin contacts. The best way to protect your little one from skin issues is to use appropriate skincare products for babies.
Newborns
Newborn babies have especially sensitive skin, and after you fall into a regular bathing routine you will often find plain warm water is adequate. However if your baby needs a little soap to get clean, consider purchasing a brand designed specifically for babies. If you prefer natural products, look for a mild cleanser containing coconut or palm oil. This will refrain from drying out baby’s skin and the oils are gentle enough to be used on a regular basis.
Newborns can also enjoy a comforting lotion following bath time, such as those containing sesame oil. Well-known companies like Johnson & Johnson manufacture soothing lotions designed for small children to help them fall asleep at night. These are considered safe for most babies and can be used as part of a regular nighttime routine.
Other Baby Products
From newborns to toddlers, little ones continue to have sensitive skin that needs attention in all areas, from shampoo to body wash to special skincare treats. Skincare products for babies should always be tested on a small part of the skin whenever you purchase something new. Both time and your baby’s maturing body will alter his/her skin’s reactions.
Until your child is school-aged (and even after, if they have especially sensitive skin), you should be cautious of items containing mineral oil or other petrochemicals. Choose products including chamomile or aloe vera if you are looking for a soothing alternative to your typical skincare products. Even baby wipes should be scrutinized if your child is experiencing a suspicious rash.
Shampoo
Special baby shampoos are mild and perfect for your little one’s thin hair. Shampooing regularly is not very necessary until the child is about one year old. Get on a regular shampoo schedule based on the oiliness of your child’s hair and whether or not it seems to need regular washing.
Stay away from artificial scents and colorants, parabens, and other preservatives that can irritate baby’s scalp and skin. Choose instead to purchase products containing citrus extracts, vitamins A and E, and other health-enhancing ingredients. Many parents opt to shop at health food stores or natural food co-ops which offer a larger selection of skincare products for babies.
Powder
Due to its purpose of drying the skin, many young children will experience skin irritation from baby powder. You can cut down on this issue by using powder very sparingly. Try to keep it scent-free and lean toward those made with cornstarch or other natural ingredients.
Baby powder only needs to be applied in the creases and folds of the skin, and many new parents make the mistake of buffing it all over baby as a skincare regimen. Use powder only when necessary, and if a diaper rash occurs, stop use immediately.
Allow fresh air to touch your baby’s skin whenever possible, as this will help clear irritation and make skincare products more effective.
Sunscreen
Babies are extremely sensitive to sunshine and should not be placed in direct sunlight before they are at least 6 months old. Even then, sun exposure should be extremely limited. You can keep your baby hydrated with a variety of fluids and protect their skin from distressing sunburns by applying a specially formulated sunscreen. Remember babies like to put things in their mouth, so make sure all lotion is rubbed in thoroughly and kept off of feet and hands if possible.
