Soft Laser Acne Scars

Lasers can heal scars, but spa treatments are expensive.

If you're interested in using a soft laser on acne scars, you should first consult with a dermatologist. Laser treatment has been shown to be an effective healer of scars, but you want to be sure your skin is strong enough to undergo such therapy before you get started.

Soft Laser and Acne Scars

When the term "soft laser" is used, it must be understood that it refers to two different things. There is the soft laser treatment that a patient undergoes under controlled circumstances with a licensed professional, and also the Soft Laser, a handheld device that can be bought for home use.

The laser therapy can work because it stimulates collagen production in the affected area. Increased collagen will raise the skin that has been depressed by the acne scar, thus making it flush with the rest of the facial skin. Relatively shallow scars can respond to the treatment very quickly, with some only needing one session to vanish.

Laser treatments have improved to the point where one can put on makeup immediately after the procedure and go on about their business. However, everyone's skin responds differently, so be sure to find an esthetician who is properly certified and will run tests before going ahead with the full treatment.

The Soft Laser

Also called the Soft Light Laser or SoftLaser, this acne scar treatment by Beurer is one you can buy for home use. It is a low-level laser said to treat wrinkles, acne, scars, stretch marks, chapped lips and just generally improve the look of your skin.

Pointed at the blemish, the laser is meant to gently stimulate the cell activity, thus promoting faster healing and rebuilding of skin. One advertisement for the Soft Laser says regular use will make you look ten years younger. No users have claimed it's that much of a miracle worker, but some note that their skin is overall more luminous.

Using the Soft Laser on Acne Scars

The Soft Laser comes with a video, booklet and flash cards, so that there is little risk of not being able to follow the directions precisely. It also comes with goggles and advises you not to stare at the laser, although it does assure you that looking at it will do no harm. You are advised to glide the laser over the affected area anywhere from three to fifteen minutes, depending on the nature of the blemish. Users agree that about six minutes is plenty, especially since the treatment is daily. It is expected that it will take several months to notice much of a response.

Reviews of Soft Laser for Acne Scars

Independent reviewers of the Soft Laser have not been too favorable of its ability to improve the look of acne scars. A few have said they saw mild improvement, particularly when used in conjunction with a similar product, like the Derma Wand. Others have said that, despite following the directions carefully, they have seen no change after more than six months of use.

The Soft Laser appears to be safe, but a few users have reported the worsening of their condition, or even new marks left by the laser that won't disappear. While this seems to be rare, it is still worth bearing in mind before deciding to purchase the Soft Laser.

If you do decide to try it, look for a site that offers the option to return if you are unsatisfied. Many sites do not allow returns, and since the Soft Laser costs nearly $200, it is something to consider before purchasing.

Consult Your Doctor

While the laser level in the Soft Laser is low, you should still consult your doctor before trying it. Everyone's skin is different and yours may be too sensitive for laser treatment. Your doctor may suggest you go to a certified esthetician instead. While this will be more expensive, it may be worth it for the faster results and peace of mind.
