Toenails
From LoveToKnow Skincare
Even if your feet are covered most of the time, it's still important to take good care of your toenails. Read on for some tips on keeping your tootsies at their healthiest and looking their best.
Basic Toenail Care
Basic nail care should be part of everyone's routine. Try to take time at least weekly to follow some basic treatments for your feet and toenails.
Cleaning
Keeping toenails clean is important. Keep a nail brush and orangewood stick separate from you fingernail tools to avoid spreading bacteria. Soak your feet for a few minutes in a solution of warm water and mild soap, and then use the nail brush to gently clean underneath beneath the nail. The tip of an orangewood stick can be used to remove any remaining debris.
You may also want to use the rounded edge of the orangewood stick to push down the cuticles, just as you do your fingernails, especially if you plan on applying polish. This keeps the cuticle skin from cracking and provides a neater appearance.
Clipping or Trimming
Clipping or trimming your toenails is also important. Keep them at a comfortable length. If you live in a warm climate or during summer sandal weather, you can wear them a bit longer length since they won't be enclosed in shoes as much of the time. Some people prefer them very short, but preferably the nails should not leave too much exposed at the tip of the toe. Your toenails are, after all, are designed to protect your toes and feet.
You can use nail clippers or nail scissors to trim your nails if they are longer than the length you desire. the most important factor with these nail tools is that they are sharp. Replace them whenever they become dull. Dull nail clippers will tear the nail and can rip off layers of nail and leave a jagged, weakened nail.
Filing
Filing is not just for fingernails. If you nails are not too long, you can just use a nail file to shorten them slightly. Emery boards are recommended, and most have both a fine and coarse grade. Use the coarse grade to reach the length you want, and the fine side to create a finished edge.
Finishing Touches
If you like the natural look, you can simply buff your toenails lightly for a shiny, healthy look. Alternately, you can apply a clear, sheer pink, nude, or beige polish.
Strengthening Polishes
Since the nails on your toes are tougher and thicker, and usually spend far less time in the water and exposed to other damaging factors than your fingernails, strengthening polishes are not usually necessary.
If you do spend a lot of time in the water, such as swimming, taking long baths, etc., however, you may want to apply a clear strengthening polish before applying nail color.
Nail Color
For most women, applying nail color is fun and helps them look their best and feel attractive. This is especially true in seasons when wearing open-toe shoes and sandals is appropriate. You may get your toe nail color done as part of a professional pedicure treatment, or you may simply do it at home.
For smooth, even application, choose a quality nail polish such as OPI. Their Flip Flop Fabulous shades of bright berry, peach, pink, orange, and red are just right for showing off your feet. Or try their Bright collections for daring shades to show off your toes. Look for shades that complement your skin tone.
Problems and Conditions
Nail Fungus
Nail fungus is a common toenail problem. Yellowing, pain, flaking, and odor are all signs of nail fungus. It may eventually go away on its own, but if it continues or you have secondary symptoms such as fatigue, nausea, or other signs of infection, you may need to seek treatment from your doctor. In some circumstances oral anti-fungal treatments are prescribed.
To prevent nail fungus:
- Keep feet dry.
- Wear sandals or waterproof shoes in pubic showers.
- Wear absorbent socks.
- Keep fee from prolonged periods in synthetic shoes.
Ingrown Toenails
Another common problem is ingrown toenails. This is often caused by ill-fitting shoes or pressure from an area of the shoe. Sometimes simply by wearing the right fitting footwear and allowing the nail to grow out can eliminate the ingrown nail. In other cases, surgical removal of the nail may be necessary.
Whole Foot Care
Taking care of the skin on your feet and around your toenails is also important. Your great-looking nails should have beautiful feet for their background.
For whole foot care:
- Use a pumice stone or foot file to slough off calluses and tough spots on a regular basis.
- Use exfoliating foot scrubs to keep the skin looking dry and dull.
- Use foot lotions or moisturizers after your shower. Apply a little before you put on your shoes for a delicious treat that will leave your feet silky soft.
- Examine your feet regularly for signs of athlete's foot. Athlete's foot is often indicated by peeling, scaling, redness or blistering, especially between the toes. In some cases you may be able to treat these conditions at home, or you may need to see your doctor.
