Vinegar Treatment for Toenail Fungus
From LoveToKnow Skincare
There are many known cures for toenail problems, such as a vinegar treatment for toenail fungus. Although western medicine can effectively treat these conditions, some people opt for natural home treatments prior to relying on medicinal products.
Toenail Fungus
Toenail fungus, like all forms of fungus, thrives in warm, dark and moist environments. Although this common nail condition (which affects over 10 percent of the population) can affect the fingernails, it is most frequent under the toenail bed.
As the fungus grows, the condition may begin to cause symptoms such as yellow or brown discoloration, it may become painful to the touch and emit a foul odor, nails may become brittle with crumbling edges, and finally, one may experience the complete shedding of the nail.
Preventing toenail fungus is the most important step in treatment. The following tips may help you prevent this unsightly and painful condition:
- If you wear socks, make sure they stay dry. It's best to wear natural fiber socks on the feet, such as wool, cotton or silk, as they will not retain water and moist conditions the way synthetic fibers will.
- Make sure the nail bed is clean and dry after showering or bathing.
- Keep toenails at a comfortably short hygienic length.
- Wear shoes with vented outsoles for air circulation.
- In public wet environments such as pools, shower rooms and locker rooms, wear a pair of flip flops to avoid contracting the bacteria.
- Avoid wearing nail polish or base coat polish until the condition is cured.
- Avoid touching or poking at the condition.
Making a Vinegar Treatment for Toenail Fungus
If you wish to use a vinegar treatment for toenail fungus, know ahead of time that results may vary. Nail problems often require professional treatment for effective results. If your condition has advanced and has begun to cause nail yellowing or a crumbling nail bed, you may wish to seek professional treatment rather than seek a natural cure.
For those with the beginning stages of nail fungus, white vinegar has proven to be effective.
To create a home vinegar treatment, follow these steps:
- Purchase a bottle of distilled white vinegar. Using a dropper or a soaked Q-tip, apply two drops of the vinegar to each affected nail twice per day (in the morning and in the evening.)
- Continue the home treatment daily until the nail has grown out and the fungus can be cut off. This can take weeks or months, depending on the length of the affected nail and the advancement of the fungus in the toenail bed.
- As you continue to treat the toenail, you will see healthy new growth appearing at the base of the nail bed. It is important that the vinegar treatment is never skipped, as you'll want to avoid affecting the new nail at the base.
- Once you cut the remaining infected area off the free edge of the toenail, continue to practice prevention tips listed above to avoid a recurrent condition.
