Not surprisingly, skin care companies constantly strive to be the forerunners in the battle against aging skin. Although eye creams serve to treat a number of grievances (not all related to aging), the most common is typically a wrinkle cream for eyes. This billion-dollar business thrives merely on the ironically timeless desire for aging men and women to achieve line-free skin.

Almost daily, it seems a new product hits the market. More often than not, the much-buzzed about products on the shelves contain "new" ingredients – to the skin care world, that is – that promise to erase the effects of time. Though some of these may be considered gimmicks, with their guarantees refuted by the scientific and medical communities, they usually offer some widespread appeal, if only until their claims are proven wrong.

In the meantime, there are a few ingredients that are considered the tried-and-true components of wrinkle creams for eyes. Of course, not all ingredients are found in all creams, but each has a specific purpose that is backed by science.

Some of the more common ingredients in the wrinkle cream for eyes include:

• Vitamin C: Applied topically, vitamin C packs a powerful punch in the effort to decrease wrinkles. Considered one of the most powerful ingredients in wrinkle creams for eyes, vitamin C increases hydration to the thin eye area and encourages cell turnover. This, in turn, reveals renewed, radiant skin. This antioxidant also improves the skin's firmness and elasticity. Used in high concentrations, vitamin C is said to encourage collagen growth and diminish the appearance of fine lines.
• Vitamin E: Known for its antioxidant and moisturizing properties, vitamin E helps diminish the appearance of fine lines while deterring the future effects of aging. Because it is so essential in preventing the breakdown of body tissues, it is an especially important ingredient to consider in the search for the perfect eye cream. Additionally, vitamin E infuses the skin with much-needed moisture.
• Vitamin A: Vitamin A is equally renowned for its anti-aging properties. It is an antioxidant that provides moisture, increases firmness and promotes suppleness. In the skin care world, it is more commonly known as retinol.
• Alpha-Hydroxy Acids: These mild fruit acids encourage skin rejuvenation by sloughing away dead skin cells. The result is fresher skin untouched by the signs of aging. Important: If your skin is already sensitive, you may experience irritation with retinol-, AHA- or BHA-based products. While this is a normal sensation, it is best to sample these products before purchasing them. Additionally, products containing these ingredients are typically costly – another excellent reason to seek out a sample before buying!
