Ebony, I'm sorry to hear that. Have you tried any of the over-the-counter skin-lightening creams available, by brands like Porcelana and Iman? They contain ingredients formulated to fade dark spots on African-American skin.

If you've tried these and they haven't worked, you might consider visiting a dermatologist who specializes in African-American skincare for a stronger treatment. Good luck.

I am a 30 yr old African AMerican Female. I am a darker complexion. I have several dark spots all over my chest and back and legs. If I get an insect bite, it scars. I can't wear simple things like tank tops, swim suits. I hate it, and it's embarrassing. I am a very outgoing female, atleast I use to be. Is there anything out there that may be able to help get rid of or lighten these spots. I don't even like for my fiance to see me at times. Please help if you can.

Shelia, thanks for your comment. Discoloration from acne is normal and typically fades away on its own. Unfortunately, this might take some time, but the good news is that it's almost always the case that the discoloration will vanish! If you want to speed the process, you can try a skin lightning cream on the marks, though it is probably a better idea to wait it out and cover it with a thick concealer while you wait for it to fade.

Jusprettie, thanks for your question. I'm sorry to hear you're going through this frustration with your skin. You've mentioned that you've tried many products. Has your dermatologist recommended you switch to a prescription medication? You may want to focus your attention on your diet in addition to working out a product regimen that works for you. Many times, skin grievances can be solved from within. Visit our Diet for Healthy Skin article for some recommendations that may help. Good luck, and please let us know if you have any more questions!

I have suffered with acne since high school, I have tried a variety of products. I follow the daily instructions, but after so long the problem comes back. I have been to a dermatologist, and the problem continues. what would you recommend?

Ms. S, this is due to the increased amount of melanin in black skin. Melanin is the skin's pigment; it protects the skin from sunlight. Lighter skinned individuals don't have this same protection, which is why sunscreen is so important! (Note, though, that everyone should wear sunscreen regardless of skin color.)

I would like to know why Black Women don't have wrinkles. It seems even when they get into their 60's and 70's most still don't have any wrinkles or even crows feet areound the eyes. Whereas Caucasian women see to start wrinkling in their mid 30's to early 40's.

Shanti, thanks so much for your comment. There are many high-end beauty lines out there that specialize in products for black skin. One of the newest is by Sephora. It's called Rx for Brown Skin and it's formulated to address the unique concerns of individuals with dark skin.

Another line more readily available is called Black Opal. It's available at drugstores nationwide. The skin care line includes fading, skin renewal and blemish products.

Interface Beauty carries a nice selection of cosmetics and skin care products. You can easily build your daily regimen with this company's lineup: They offer everything from toners to cleansers to moisturizers, each suited for a particular skin type.

The truth be told: There are better products for black skin than the suggested Cover Girl and Maybelline products mentioned in the article. May someone advise on high-end products for black skin?
