Thanks for your question, Sarah! It is actually the oils that protect the skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays. Sesame oil is said to resist 30% of UV rays while avocado, coconut and walnut are thought to resist up to 20%. People who love natural products are a big fan of this formulation, but if your skin burns easily you may wish to stick with a regular formula because you will likely receive far stronger protection from those. Jennifer, like you I have very sensitive skin. One of my new favorites is Vanicream SPF 60. Vanicream products are outstanding for easily irritated skin, and the sunscreen is free of ingredients that typically cause discomfort. Hope this helps!

The best way to go with sunscreen is to go natural. Chemical sunscreens absorb the suns rays while natural ones like Zinc oxide and Titanium Dioxide block the rays from skin. Some use a combination of both. Titanium and Zinc oxide are also less water soluable so they wear longer. I am very sensitive to sunscreens. mystellabellashop.com has an spf30 that has zinc in it and is lightweight and non irritating. It's recommended for cancer patients and survivors. If you can't find one you like, check that one out.

I spend very long days outside in a mountain environment with high UV levels. My skin is very sensitive and even with SPF 45 I can get sun rash. The homemade recipe sounds great, but I know you said it has a low SPF. Can you recommend any commercial brands that are better for sensitive skin but offer high SPF?

Lauren, the shea butter, avocado oil and sesame oil contain low amounts of SPF. Of the various oils used to make homemade sunscreens, avocado has been proven the most effective, so any at-home recipe for sunscreen should contain that, at the very least. It's also great for sensitive skin types.

Remember though that the protection level is minimal, so if you're going to be lying on the beach for hours, you'll be safer using a commercial product.

Chantale, great question. One thing that should be mentioned is that homemade sunscreens provide only a limited amount of protection from UVA/UVB rays. They are, though, very strong moisturizers. Using them in combination with a commercial sunscreen will provide you with some extra protection and the benefit of additional moisture.
